ActivMed Practices & Research, Inc. is a registered woman-owned company, operating in Massachusetts and New Hampshire since 1994. Our staff has experience working in the field of clinical research. The CEO has 24+ years of clinical research experience, and her staff and physicians all have 2-22 years working in clinical trials. We have four sites located in Methuen, MA, Beverly, MA, Lawrence, MA, and Portsmouth, NH.
Our company offers a multi-specialty free-standing research facility with experienced research physicians and psychiatrists. We use highly trained coordinators and private physician practices. Our providers are dedicated to providing exceptional treatment to their patients following Good Clinical Practice.
We are committed to assuring that all clinical trial protocols are performed with the utmost attention to detail. ActivMed can participate in Phase II, III, IIIb and IV clinical trials on an inpatient and outpatient basis. New for 2020, we are proud to be certified as a Virtual Trial Capable site through VirTrial.
Our area physician providers have active practices in Northern Massachusetts and Southern New Hampshire, which provides us access to more patients; therefore, we pride ourselves in the ability to quickly recruit subjects for our trials. We work full-time at our job and that makes all the difference.
We can use central IRB’s and have a standard 3-5-day turnaround time for contracts.
Our largest location is our Methuen site, which holds our Administrative Offices. This newly- renovated space is an 11,000 square foot office with a Learning Center that holds 40 people. We host CEU events and other industry-related trainings.
On our clinical side, we have a large waiting area, 6 exams rooms, a consenting room, lab area with drawing stations, -20 & -70 freezers, centrifuges, refrigerated centrifuges, ECG machines, large monitor room, copier and computer hookups/Wi-Fi. Drug storage area that is locked, alarmed, and temperature monitored. Storage area for lab kits. We also have a regulatory office, physician’s office, brand new observation room with two-way mirror and audio/visual recording equipment to observe devices and study subjects using them. Located 28 miles north of Boston with access to 6 local hospitals, and a working relationship with 3 Boston hospitals.
Beverly location is 2,170 square feet of medical office space. This site focuses on dermatology studies. This site is 20 miles from Boston and close to 3 hospitals for services needed.
Our Lawrence location is 1000 square feet of medical office space within a neurology practice 20 miles north of Boston.
Both facilities are equipped with waiting areas, exam rooms, consenting areas, lab areas with drawing stations, -20 & -70 freezers, centrifuges, refrigerated centrifuges, ECG machines, storage space, large monitoring rooms, copier and computer hookups/Wi-Fi. Drug storage area that is locked, alarmed, and temperature monitored, and storage area for lab kits.
ActivMed also has access to the following ancillary services provided by nearby facilities (1-5 miles away). We have agreements for priority scheduling for all our study subjects and stat reporting:
Chief Medical Officer:
Michael McCartney MD/CPI completed his training and residency at Brown University. He is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and has 20 years of clinical research experience. He has been ACRP certified as a Principal Investigator since 2012.
Psychiatric Medical Director:
Marc Shay MD has been working in the field of psychiatry for 16 years. His research experience spans more than 14 years. He serves as a primary investigator and protocol reviewer for all psychiatric and neurology clinical trials. Dr. Shay completed his training and residency at Northwestern Evanston Campus and Chicago Medical School
All ActivMed physicians are board certified in the following areas of specialties:
ActivMed trains our highly motivated staff to excel in patient care as well as all aspects of clinical research. All Clinical Staff are HIPAA, GCP, IATA and CPR trained and re-certified every two years. Each of our four locations are CLIA waiver certified. Each coordinator is encouraged to take the ACRP national certification exam while ActivMed covers the costs of the exam. Currently we have 4 CCRC’s on our staff in these offices. All our coordinators have a medical background with clinical experiences such as nursing, laboratory, nutrition, medical doctrine, medical assisting, and bioscience. Each coordinator is tested yearly on their clinical skills. Documentation of training is recorded in our staff training logs and office SOP’s. Research experience in years expands from 2 years to 22 years. Quality is of the utmost importance to us, therefore most of our staff have completed Clinical Research Quality Management training through the Quality Management Institute
ActivMed has dedicated Recruitment staff who work closely with PI’s and Coordinators to develop an optimal recruitment strategy that evolves as needed throughout the study. We dedicate time and effort towards recruitment plans for each trial. Our robust CTMS system and Call Center allow us to quickly follow up on leads from various advertising channels and doctor referrals.
ActivMed is located north of Boston. We can draw from both suburban and rural communities. Our patient base covers a diverse population based on age, gender and cultural backgrounds. We are a bilingual facility (speaking both English and Spanish). Recruitment is accomplished using one-to-one communication, established databases and local marketing campaigns
