Overview
The Rogosin Institute was established in 1983 as an independent, not-for-profit institution for research and health care specializing in kidney disease including chronic kidney failure, diabetic kidney disease, polycystic kidney disease, end stage renal disease and transplantation, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease due to cholesterol and other lipid disorders.
The Rogosin Institute is affiliated with NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medicine and is a corporate member of NewYork-Presbyterian Regional Hospital Network. Rogosin Institute members are on the staff of New York-Presbyterian Hospital and have appointments at Weill Cornell Medical College. Several are also on the adjunct faculty at The Rockefeller University.
Research Experience
The Rogosin Institute has been involved in clinical research since its inception in 1983. Phase 1 to 4 studies and investigator-initiated studies are conducted. Our therapeutic interests and clinical trial experience with more than 50 pharmaceutical companies and contract research organizations include:
- End-stage renal disease (ESRD) involving subjects who are on hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis or home nocturnal hemodialysis
- Polycystic kidney disease
- Chronic kidney disease (CKD) involving subjects who are pre-dialysis
- Diabetic kidney disease
- Hypertension; primary and secondary to kidney disease
- Kidney and kidney/pancreas transplantations
- Cardiovascular disease
- Dyslipidemia disorders
- Hypercholesterolemia
- Familial hypercholesterolemia, including adult and pediatric homozygous and heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HoFH and HeFH)
Facility Description
The Rogosin Institute has clinical facilities in Manhattan at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical College as well as in Queens and Brooklyn. The Rogosin Institute offers both outpatient facilities and inpatient facilities.
Rogosin Institute outpatient facilities include:
- Jack J. Dreyfus Clinic, an outpatient facility for the prevention and treatment of kidney disease;
- Susan R. Knafel Polycystic Disease Center, located within the Jack J. Dreyfus Clinic, to diagnose, prevent and treat complications related to polycystic kidney disease. This was designated as a Center of Excellence by the PKD Foundation in 2023 so patients can more easily locate a patient-focused, comprehensive care team dedicated to help them live their best lives;
- Hemodialysis centers located in Manhattan, Queens and Brooklyn;
- David D. Thompson Transplantation Center for kidney transplants and simultaneous pancreas-kidney transplants; and
- Maurice R. Greenberg Comprehensive Lipid Control Center for prevention and treatment of atherosclerosis and its risk factors for adults and children.
Rogosin Institute inpatient facilities in NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical College include:
- The Rogosin Institute Wing for patients requiring hospitalization for kidney disease- related problems and kidney transplantation; and
- The Rogosin Institute Ralph J. Bunch Dialysis and Apheresis Center for patients undergoing intensive care hemodialysis or LDL-apheresis, which is a specialized treatment for severe genetic hypercholesterolemia.
Investigator Experience
The investigators at The Rogosin Institute include 22 physicians and two PhDs. The clinical research program offers a clinical research manager, research nurse practitioners and full-time clinical research coordinators.
Jeffrey Silberzweig, MD
Nephrology
Dr. Silberzweig is the director of the clinical research program and Chief Medical Officer of The Rogosin Institute. He is a professor of clinical medicine and surgery at Weill Cornell Medical College and an attending physician at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital. Dr. Silberzweig has overall responsibility for oversight of the clinical research program and has been conducting clinical research for more than 25 years. His research focuses primarily on chronic kidney disease and its management including complications from CKD.

Ms. Sloan has more than 30 years of experience in clinical research at The Rogosin Institute and is the manager for the clinical research program. Ms. Sloan is a staff associate in the Department of Medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College.

The Rogosin Institute employs a highly trained staff of more than 520 professionals, including physicians, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, social workers, dialysis technicians, phlebotomy technicians, basic and clinical research staff, and registered dietitians.
Patient Demographics
The Rogosin Institute’s patient facilities are located in New York City, Brooklyn and Queens and include ten dialysis centers. Patients mainly come from the greater New York and tri-state area, which is populated with approximately 20,000,000 people. The Rogosin Institute has access to many diverse nationalities and ages.
Other Information
Institutional Review Boards: The Rogosin Institute can conduct clinical research studies using either central (commercial) IRBs or the local IRBs of Weill Cornell Medical College or The Rockefeller University.
Federalwide Assurance: The Rogosin Institute holds a Federalwide Assurance (FWA 00005225) registered with the Office for Human Research Protection (OHRP).
Clinical and Translational Science Centers: The Rogosin Institute has access to Clinical and Translational Science Centers (CTSC) at both New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical College and The Rockefeller University.
Electronic Medical Records: The Rogosin Institute utilizes Epic and Darwin electronic medical record systems. These provide immediate access to information on a patient’s history, treatment and laboratory data at all Rogosin Institute facilities and NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical College.
Information Technology: The Rogosin Institute employs a full-time database systems manager to provide our investigators with data management for investigator-initiated studies.
