WHO Outlines Criteria for COVID-19 Vaccine Challenge Trials
A working group of the World Health Organization (WHO) has indicated its support of COVID-19 vaccine challenge studies, but made it clear that those trials must meet eight conditions for them to be considered.
In its guidance, the WHO working group made it clear that there needs to be scientific justification, an assessment of potential benefits, fully informed consent of participants and a focus on enrolling only healthy, young adults who are considered to be at low risk of serious disease.
The report noted healthcare workers and researchers would be appropriate participants for a COVID-19 challenge study, as they have a higher probability of infection and are informed about the risks associated with the virus.
